On the last day of my leave, I asked Rosalynn to marry me, and was taken aback when she turned me down. I headed back to the Naval Academy in despair, despite her promise to reconsider after she had spent two more years in college, to fulfill a promise made to her father on his deathbed. I persisted with my proposal when she came to visit me on Lincoln’s Birthday, and she finally changed her mind. We were married in the Plains Methodist Church a month after I received my commission as an ensign. We returned to Plains for the following Christmas as man and wife, from our home in Norfolk, Virginia, where I was assigned to duty after being graduated from Annapolis.
